The market for LED lighting has emerged strongly over recent years following the technological development which made LED lighting more applicable for a wide range of uses, ranging from street to automotive lighting. Despite of the economic downturn, which has resulted in significant sale declines for established lighting product companies, the market for LED lighting continued to grow in 2009.

An estimated 19% of the world-wide electricity consumption can be ascribed to lighting. As a substantial part, public lighting is offering a huge market potential for energy efficient street lighting systems.

Approx 2.35 million street lights are replaced or/and newly installed in the member countries of the European Union each year.

Based on these and numerous other facts industry specialists forecast, that the street lighting segment will become the second largest LED application (after backlights) by 2013.
